Top 10 Safety Tips for ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ
Campus safety is the responsibility of our entire campus community. No police department can be successful without the support and assistance of a responsible community.
- Save important numbers in your cell phone (University Police: 562.985.4101). Designate an emergency contact in your phone and pick an out-of-state contact.
- Report ALL crimes, suspicious persons, or suspicious activities as soon as possible. Stay alert, be aware of your surroundings, and follow your instincts. If something doesn't look or feel right, report it.
- Confirm your contact information is always current in your MyÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ account to ensure that you receive any BeachALERT emergency notifications.
- Utilize campus shuttles or CSO Escorts if on campus after dark. When walking on campus, always take the safest route, not the fastest route. Stay in well lit areas and always use sidewalks and crosswalks.
- Do not leave your personal belongings unattended, even for a few minutes. Do not ask someone you do not know to watch your things while you step away.
- Protect your personal information, share only what is required for official University business. This includes your cell phone number!
- Register your bicycle with us at the University Police Substation (USU) and lock your bike properly every time with a U-lock. Cable and chain locks can be easily cut. Only lock your bike to bicycle racks, not to poles, trees, or railings that may not be as secure.
- Know where emergency phones and "blue light" phone poles are located along the routes you usually take and inside the buildings when you attend classes.
- Be wary of scams - both online and local scams that target students. If a "deal" sounds too good to be true it usually is! Reconsider signing up for magazine subscriptions, gym memberships, or credit cards that ask for personal information but may not be legitimate.
- Use the "buddy system". Share your schedule and evening plans with close friends and family. Tell them where you are going, who you will be with, and when you expect to return home. Travel with others as often as possible.
