Security Awareness

Access to Campus Facilities:

Security is the responsibility of our entire campus community. No police department can function effectively without the support and assistance of a responsible community. All suspicious activity should be reported immediately to the University Police at 562.985.4101. All academic buildings are secured by University Police; on weekdays by 11:00pm and on weekends by 9:30pm. During business hours, the University, with the exception of housing, is open to students, parents, employees, contractors, and guests. During non-business hours access to all campus facilities is by key, if issued, or by admittance via the University Police. Some facilities may have individual hours, which may vary at different times throughout the year. These facilities will be secured according to schedules developed by the department responsible for those facilities. ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, faculty, and staff working on campus during non-business hours are required to have their photo I.D. card with them. Holiday access scheduling is treated as weekend access. Emergencies may necessitate changes or alterations to any posted schedule.

Residence halls are secured 24 hours a day and access is limited to residents, escorted guests and university staff. Entry is monitored through a combination of keys and on-duty Housing and Residential Life personnel. The campus facilities are maintained by Facilities Management and patrolled by University Police 24 hours a day. Regular weekly checks are conducted by University Police to identify security concerns such as poor lighting or phones in need of repair.

Awareness Programs:

ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ and employees are provided with numerous opportunities during the academic year to attend seminars about crime prevention, personal safety, theft prevention, sexual assault, and many other topics offered in collaboration with departments outside of the University Police Department.

University Police, Housing and Residential Life, Student Life and Development, Facilities Management, Student Health Services, and the Women's and Gender Equity Center all collaborate in programs offered periodically throughout the academic year to promote awareness and prevention throughout our campus community.

Residential Halls:

Each semester residential hall staff meet with their respective halls to inform residents on security tips, fire safety, evacuation plans, and alcohol, drugs, and weapons policies. Special programs are also offered throughout the semester to keep student awareness high and to inform students of any local crime trends.

Counseling and Psychological Services (located in Brotman Hall 226) can provide a safe environment to allow for discussion, treatment, and recovery. CAPS provides an opportunity to voluntarily report a crime in a confidential manner.
