Spotlight Series: Program Coordinator
Program Coordinator: Yesenia A. Hernandez
Hi! I am Yesenia the Program Coordinator for the Caminos Project. I am a San Pedro, ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñnative with Mexican roots. After finishing high school, I moved to Iowa to attend Cornell College for my undergraduate degree in Human Rights and Religious Studies. While attending Cornell I became involved in student organizing on campus. My proudest moment at Cornell was helping to create and facilitate a college access conference and program for ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ of Color in Iowa. After leaving college, I continued to work in education and joined UCLA’s BruinCorps program as a College Center Coordinator for various high schools in Compton and Culver City. I later worked for ÃÛÌÒÓ°ÏñState University’s Chancellor’s Office Center for Community Engagement as a STEM Program Leader where I worked with professionals at various CSU’s. After working in education for a few years I decided to continue my education. I am currently a graduate student in ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ’s M.A in Social and Cultural Analysis of Education program (SCAE). I plan to graduate in Spring 2020 after submitting my thesis.
I joined the Caminos Project as Program Coordinator because I wanted to work in my community helping Latinx students. Teachers play a vital role in society and I wanted to be a part of creating opportunities for Latinxs teachers and other students at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ. I find joy in building community with students and helping students reach their goals and cultivate their passions. As a first-generation student and Latina, I feel deeply committed to ensuring the success of the Latinx community because I believe true success comes from not only self-care but community care as well.
