Online Learning Studio

Winter Session, January 4-24, 2021 

This special edition winter session of the Online Learning Studio is reserved for instructors who did not participate in one of the Chancellor's Office or ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ summer 2020 (stipend-based) professional development programs related to alternative modes of instruction (AMI).

In this program, faculty will explore core principles of online pedagogy and get practical instructions for developing courses in the BeachBoard learning management system (LMS). The program includes enrollment in a BeachBoard course which gives faculty the flexibility to work at their own pace and access reference materials at any time. Recorded webinar sessions that reinforce concepts are included in the course.

Stipend and Work Hours

A $750 stipend will be awarded after successful completion of the course requirements listed below by March 19, 2021.  Depending on your level of experience with technology and course design, completing the requirements will take approximately 15-20 hours.

Please submit your completed application by December 11, 2020.  Due to limited availability, applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

The Online Learning Studio BeachBoard course modules include:

  • Intro to Online Teaching
    An overview of the steps involved in developing an online course. We'll also touch on concerns such as academic integrity and creating engagement among students.
  • Accessibility
    The basics of online course accessibility and the resources available to assist you in developing course materials.
  • Course Design Alignment
    The course elements that ensure alignment with student learning outcomes including content structure, activities, and materials.
  • Assessment and Activities
    Assessment types and activities that engage students and reinforce learning outcomes.
  • Choosing Technology Tools
    Tools often used in online and hybrid classes such as video conferencing (Zoom), discussion boards, and videos.
  • Media Creation
    BeachBoard tools to record lectures or import media from other sources to share with your students.
  • Syllabus & Course Homepage
    Best practices for an online syllabus and how to set up your course structure.
  • Class Templates
    Various layouts and elements of modules to help organize your course that you can use right away.

Complete the following activities by March 19, 2021. Depending on your level of experience with technology and course design, completing the requirements will take approximately 15-20 hours.

  1. Access the Online Learning Studio
    Review the Online Learning Studio course modules and complete the quizzes.
  2. Attend Webinars
    Review or attend the 5 companion webinars related to the course modules.
  3. Complete Checklist
    Use the Alternative Modes of Instruction Checklist [DOC] and apply each standard to your course. Provide a course design reflection, or a request a peer review.
  4. Apply Course Alignment Blueprint
    Use the Course Alignment Blueprint [DOC] to input 2-3 full weeks that are aligned.
  5. Build and Develop Modules
    Build 2-3 weeks of course modules in your BeachBoard course demonstrating course alignment (you may use pre-built BeachBoard course templates to accelerate the development process).
  6. Work with Faculty Champions
    Facilitate ongoing communication and collaboration with department and college Faculty Champions and Faculty Leads.
  7. Submit Documents
    Faculty will submit completed documents within the Online learning Studio course for evaluation.

To join the Online Learning Studio BeachBoard course and complete the required activities, participants should have access to the following technology:
