Linguistics is the science of language. Linguistics is the study of the origin, components, structure and relationship within language in order to understand how it functions in a system, both in the mind and in social context of those who speak it. Because of the nature and role of language throughout the history of humanity, linguistics has remained a dynamic and vital science. ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ in linguistics acquire a strong aptitude for working with words and sounds. ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ develop the ability to be creative in problem solving, the ability to analyze and decipher written materials, along with developing strong written and verbal communication skills. ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ learn to analyze language in its social and cultural context. In recent decades, new applications of linguistics have emerged in education, psychology, sociology, philosophy, and computer science. ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ may obtain a baccalaureate minor or a master of arts in linguistics. Although not required for the minor, foreign language courses are recommended. A master's degree is frequently needed as the basic requirement for entry into a professional position in this field.
